BU runs to a 0-0 tie with UNH

VESTAL -- Continuing an evenly-matched all-time series that is deadlocked after 13 games (5-5-3), Binghamton womens soccer (6-4-1, 0-1-1 AE) battled visiting New Hampshire (3-6-2, 1-0-1 AE) to a 0-0 double overtime draw Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

The teams played through 110 minutes with Binghamton holding an 18-12 shots advantage but neither team was able to capitalize on its chances. The last 10 games between the two schools have resulted in either a tie or a one-goal decision.

We got the point so we are on the board in the conference standings ... but obviously we wanted the win, head coach Sarah McClellan said.
I thought we did a good job of possessing the ball and getting it to the feet of our forwards, who took care of it. Coming into the game we wanted to do a better job of that and we did. We were more dangerous off our possessions and our forwards played hard on the attack. We created some quality chances and if we keep doing that, the goals will come. Getting the shutout is huge ... Im really happy with that. The point will help us gain some ground in the standings as we move along in the schedule.

Binghamton held an 8-4 shots margin in the first half with leading scorer Sarah Furminger creating two good chances midway through the period. She broke in alone on the right side in the 12th minute but her 15-yard blast sailed high. Then in the 24th minute, she was tripped outside the box. Senior linemate Kerry Sullivan took the free kick and fed Furminger with a short pass on the left. Furminger beat her mark and cut toward goal but her shot from close range went into the arms of the UNH keeper.

On the defensive side, junior keeper Carrie Martin made a key stop to preserve the halftime tie. With less than four minutes remaining in the period, she raced out to thwart a Wildcats forward as she came upon a through ball inside the box.

The Bearcats had the first of two golden opportunities just six minutes into the second half when Furminger sent a cross deep into the box and Sullivans volley went wide right from six yards. In the 70th minute, senior midfielder Emily Pape took a feed from Furminger but drilled her shot directly at the keeper from 12 yards.
New Hampshire began to pressure late in the second half and with 14:14 remaining, Stephanie Speirs was tested after entering for Martin to start the second half. Speirs dove to snare a cross with a Wildcat forward lurking on the goalmouth. The visitors fired seven shots in the second half, including a diving header that Speirs saved with 2:22 remaining.

Binghamton had one final glorious chance to score with 45 seconds left in regulation when senior midfielder Brittany Walsh dribbled down the left wing and sent a deep cross to the middle, where freshman midfielder Katie Corcorans volley just went wide of the far post.

The Bearcats had a corner kick in the second overtime but the ensuing shot from senior back Meghan Campbell was saved.
Martin and Speirs split the shutout. The pair have combined to produce five shutouts and a 0.80 goals against average.

Binghamton heads to Long Island on Sunday to face Stony Brook before returning for three straight home games.
