Making More Milk for Greek Yogurt
9/17/2012 (Updated 9:05:57 PM)
Senator Charles Schumer is calling for more incentive to encourage the expansion of milk production in the area.
One program would provide grant money to build a biodigester.
A biodigester is a machine which turns cow waste into fertilizer.
The other program would allow farms with less than two hundred cows to get another 100 cows without being charged any additional fees by the government.
"With the economy being the way it is everyone is struggling and farmers especially because we're land based heavy and taxes are great around here, so any incentives that we can get from grant services is crucial to farmers staying in business," said Judi Whittaker, the owner of a dairy farm.
The state is trying to produce more milk to keep up with the thriving Greek yogurt industry.
