BU WSOC blasts past Lehigh

VESTAL -- Senior forward Jamie Holliday finished with a goal and two assists while fellow senior forward Sarah Furminger scored twice, powering Binghamton (3-1-0) to a 4-0 win over Lehigh in a non-conference womens soccer game at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory in their home opener, the Bearcats are off to their best start since 2008.

The four goals represents the most scored by Binghamton since its 4-2 win over Vermont on Oct. 4, 2007. Hollidays four points ties her career high and her two assists represents her career high. Her first four-point effort came when she scored twice in a 3-1 win over Temple on Sept. 18, 2009. Furminger, meanwhile, finished with two goals for the second time in her career. Her first two-goal outburst come in a 3-0 win at Bucknell on Sept. 8, 2010.

Today was a good step for us, head coach Sarah McClellan said. I thought our attack was very dangerous and our defense was very solid. The timing of our runs was on today. We got some one on ones against the goalkeepers. We know we have a lot of capable forwards so it was great to see the potential showing up today.

Although Lehigh wound up with a 9-8 shot advantage, the Bearcats were able to take advantage of several passes that got behind the defense. In the 19th minute, senior midfielder Brittany Walsh fired a long ball to Holliday who got through the defense and was able to beat Lehigh goalkeeper Ashley Banks. It was Hollidays first goal of the season.

Holliday and Furminger teamed up in the 57th minute to make it 2-0. This time Holliday was the player to deliver the ball past the defense and Furminger finished off the play for her second goal of the year. The Bearcat would strike again in the 75th minute to put Binghamton up 3-0.

Binghamton cleared the bench towards the end of the game but kept up the offensive pressure. Junior forward Sophia Sylla finished off a breakaway in the 84th minute for the final goal of the game.

Junior goalkeepers Carrie Martin and Stephanie Speirs combined to produce Binghamtons third shutout of the season.
