Expectations High for Apple Crop
8/27/2012 (Updated 11:13:01 PM)
This year's apple crop is better than expected. Due to a very warm March, then a cold snap in April, some apple farmers feared the crop would be a total loss.
However, that's not the case for Apple Hills in Binghamton.
Owner Dave Johnson said while crops are down about 40%, there is an upside. "Since it was so dry and hot this summer it's going to bring out the sugars, so actually I think the apples are going to taste very good this year, just due to the fact that the sun brings out all the flavor in all the fruit," said Johnson.
Johnson said due to the early spring, it's important to note that apple season is starting two to three weeks earlier than usual.
