BU Men start season with OT loss

HAMILTON, N.Y.Mike Reidy scored 56 seconds into sudden-death overtime, lifting host Colgate (1-0-0) to a 3-2 win over Binghamton (0-1-0) on Friday afternoon.

The defending Patriot League champions got the ball down the field quickly in the extra session. Reidy then put the ball into the box and it deflected of a defender into the net.

Binghamton forced overtime when senior forward Jake Keegan netted an unassisted goal in the 87th minute. It was his 18th career goal and marked the second time in two seasons he has scored in the first game of the season.

The Bearcats started off the game strong as senior defender Tommy Klim headed in a corner kick from senior midfielder Adam Whitehead in the 18th minute. In the 40th minute, however, senior goalkeeper Chris Hayen left the game with a soft tissue injury. He was replaced by true freshman Logan Calvey, who played the remainder of the game.

From there Tanner Schilling deadlocked the game in the 42nd minute with a shot from just outside the box. Nick Arpey was credited with the assist. Mike Garzi then gave the Red Radiers the lead in the 66th minute when his shot from 18 yards out deflected into the net.

Our guys really fought to tie the game up late in the second half, head coach Paul Marco said. Its unfortunate that we didnt come out as prepared for overtime. I thought that we settled down after the first 10 minutes and played well for much of the first half. Colgate is a very good team and made the key plays of the match.

Colgate held a 16-8 advantage in shots. Calvey finished with five saves.
