B-Mets squeak out 1-0 win

BINGHAMTON -- Greg Peavey fired seven shutout innings and the Binghamton Mets scored the games only run on a fielding error in a 1-0 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Peavey struck out a season-high six in Binghamtons eighth shutout win of the season.

It was a contest loaded with missed opportunities as the teams combined to strand 21 men on base and go 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Binghamton threatened early against Fisher Cats starter Deck McGuire, but stranded seven runners through the first four innings.

New Hampshire pressed to break the scoreless game in the fifth. After a one-out double by Jake Marisnick put runners at second and third, Peavey induced Ryan Goins to ground out and intentionally walked Ryan Schimpf to load the bases. The gamble paid off as Brad Glenn struck out to end the inning.

Binghamton finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Dustin Martin led off with single and tried to score on Wilmer Flores double to center, but was gunned down at the plate. Following a groundout that pushed Flores to third, Eric Campbell stroked a ground ball to third. The sharp roller bounced through the legs of Ryan Schimpf, allowing Flores to score.

Peavey made the one-run lead stand over his final two innings. The righty fired a perfect sixth and stranded two runners in the seventh. Over his seven shutout innings, Peavey allowed six hits and left nine men aboard.

Jeff Kaplan took over in the eighth and worked around a two-out single to post a scoreless inning. Drew Carpenter got the call in the ninth and left the tying run at second to earn his second save as a B-Met.

Peavey (7-8) fired a career-high seven shutout innings to earn his third win in August, the most wins he has had in any month as a B-Met. McGuire (5-15) took the hard-luck loss allowing an unearned run in five innings of work. Joel Carreno closed the tab with three scoreless innings of relief.

The B-Mets (62-67) look to take the rubber match Wednesday night at 6:35 PM. LHP Mark Cohoon opposes RHP Fernando Hernandez.
