B-Mets fall short in opener with Fisher Cats
8/20/2012 (Updated 11:06:20 PM)
Box Score
The Fisher Cats took advantage of shaky glove work by first baseman Jefry Marte to break a scoreless game in the fourth. With one out and the bases loaded, Brian Jeroloman chopped a potential double play ball to Marte. Playing in just his fifth game at first, Marte bobbled the grounder, allowing a run to score. The Fisher Cats plated another run one batter later when Marte dropped a throw from third baseman Wilmer Flores that would have ended the inning.
Binghamton answered back against New Hampshire starter Sean Nolin in the bottom of the fourth. Wilmer Flores zipped a double down the third base line and scored when Allan Dykstra lofted a double into the left field gap. It was the only run Binghamton managed against the southpaw in his Double-A debut. Nolin allowed four runs and struck out eight over five innings of work.
Nolin exited with a chance to win, but settled for a no-decision after the B-Mets struck for a run in the sixth. Marcus Stroman took over, walked the first two batters, uncorked a wild pitch and surrendered a game-tying sac fly to Eric Campbell.
The tie game did not last for long when Gorski loaded the bases in the seventh on two hits and a walk. John Tolisano worked the count full and took ball four low to force in the go-ahead run.
Binghamton failed to mount another comeback against the rest of the Fisher Cats bullpen. John Stilson struck out four over two shutout frames and Trystan Magnuson shut the door with a scoreless ninth.
Stroman (2-0) earned his second win while Magnuson collected his third save. Gorski (8-7) struck out a season-high nine, but allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks over seven innings. Ryan Fraser closed Binghamton's pitching tab with two scoreless innings.
The B-Mets (61-67) continue their series against the Fisher Cats Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Greg Peavey toes the rubber for the B-Mets against RHP Deck McGuire.
