Summer School Online in Owego

For rising high school senior Makayla, summer school is not the typical experience. Instead of a traditional classroom, she learns online.

"You don't have to worry about a teacher saying this is due today. You can read and take it slow and do it yourself, but make sure you get it done," said Makayla Perkins of Owego.

Broome-Tioga is one of the first BOCES in the state to use the advanced academic program. Students use interactive technology to prepare for the Regents exams next week.

Students use instant messenger to communicate with online teachers 24/7.

There are diagnostic tests after each lesson so that students can learn at their own pace.

"This isn't the old days of just show up to summer school and get credit for just being here. These kids have to work and earn their grades, and they're happy to do so and they're engaged on the computer, which is sometimes a challenge to engage them in the regular school year," said Tom Beatty, BOCES Summer School Principal.

The program was chosen partly because it is cost effective. It allows for more classes and requires fewer teachers.

"It's been a big adjustment because I'm used to being the one in charge of showing the kids what to do. But they're really a little bit more self-motivated with this program," said Rain Lindaman, one of the teachers. 

The question is: will this type of learning technology became more and more a part of the traditional classroom?

"There is a place for it in a blended learning model. I do think there is a future for this. We can't avoid the technology. It's here."
