Humane Society Hosts Its Annual Duck Derby
8/11/2012 (Updated 10:50:44 PM)
the chenango river had a yellow glow this afternoon. as thousands of rubber duckies plunged into the water for the second annual duck derby. people came from all over the southern tier to race for some very nice cash prizes.
"Holy cow! I was just so excited. Never thought in a million years that we would win. I think we're going to give 500 dollars back to the humane society." said Aneesha Thomas, First Place Winner.
All of the money raised today will go to benefit The Humane Society to help find homes for animals like this one, said Fox 40's Samantha McDonald.
"It's fantastic that we know we're helping the animals in our community that need our help. There are a lot of abused animals in our community. We are the only entity that investigates animal cruelty in Broome County." said Karen Matson, Executive Director of the Humane Society.
There was food, games, and of course the highlight of the event was the animals, which included ponies, donkeys, and dogs. The event provided fun for the whole family.
"We had a lot of fun-- did the games, got balloons and everything. So we had a good time." said John Boyle, who attended the event.
Officials say that there were more vendors this year than last, and they expect the event to grow even more next year.
