B-Mets power themselves to a win

BINGHAMTON -- The Binghamton Mets scored seven two-out runs and plated five runs in the second in an 8-3 win over the New Britain Rock Cats Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets went 6-for-11 with runners in scoring position and got six strong innings from Darin Gorski to gain one game on the Rock Cats in the playoff race.

Gorski's night did not get off on a steady foot. Aaron Hicks led off the game with a triple down the third base line and scored two batters later on a double by Oswaldo Arcia. It was the only time Binghamton trailed in the contest.

The B-Mets tied the game in the bottom of the first when starter Aaron Thompson walked Raul Reyes with the bases loaded, his third free pass of the inning.

Binghamton broke the tie with a five-run second. With runners at the corners, Reese Havens threaded an RBI single to center to give Binghamton a 2-1 lead. After a fielder's choice and a fly out, Allan Dykstra stroked a two-out run-scoring single to center. Jefry Marte capped the rally by blasting a three-run homer into the rail yard in left field. His ninth home run of the season gave Binghamton a 6-1 lead.

Gorski settled in after his bumpy first inning and retired 17 of the final 20 Rock Cats he faced. The southpaw allowed just one more run on a solo homer by Chris Colabello in the sixth. Gorski capped his night after six innings, working around a walk and a single to cap his night with a scoreless frame.

After Armando Rodriguez posted a scoreless seventh, Francisco Pena padded Binghamton's lead with a two-out, two-run single to right off reliever Marty Popham in the bottom of the inning.

Adam Kolarek took over in the eighth, but recorded just one out. The lefty issued a leadoff walk, surrendered a single and exited after allowing a sac fly to Oswaldo Arcia that cut Binghamton's lead down to five. Ryan Fraser entered and took the game to the finish line. The righty retired both batters he faced in the eighth and worked a perfect ninth inning.

Gorski (7-6) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two while going six innings for the eighth time in the last nine games. Thompson (3-7) extended his winless streak to seven games.

The B-Mets (56-61) conclude their season series with the Rock Cats Thursday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Greg Peavey takes the mound for Binghamton against LHP Logan Darnell.
