Woman Loses Leg in Motorcycle Accident

A motorcycle accident late Tuesday afternoon has left an area woman with a severe injury.

The accident happened on I-81 Southbound, a short distance before Exit 3 near Kirkwood.  The lone rider, a female, lost her right leg from the impact.

State Police have not released the victim's identity yet, but they do say she was from the Endicott area.

Police say there was no other vehicle involved in the crash.

"For an unknown reason, she lost control, and hit the guardrail," said New York State Police Sgt. Todd Burdick from the Deposit Barracks.  "She went over the guardrail and had a leg amputated.  She was taken to Wilson Hospital."

Sgt. Burdick said the injured woman was alert and talking when emergency crews reached her. 

The accident caused a lane closure, and traffic was backed up for a while.  The highway was not closed down.
