Bridge in Barker Still Closed

Residents in the Town of Barker who've been waiting two years for a bridge repair may need to wait one more.

Residents say that the bridge on South Street has been closed to cars, but open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

The Broome County Department of Public Works recently received state comments on the design plan last week after a lengthy review.

Now the plans can be finalized and put out for bids.

The county hopes construction will begin next summer.

"You know it's inconvenient especially if someone has a heart attack you know. Rescue has to come the Whitney Point way to get here, it just takes too long to get here. It has got to be bad for a fire you know somebody has a fire on this road. It's bad for law enforcement the whole ten yards," said John DuBraba of Barker.

Federal funds were originally set to pay for the repair. But during the process the aid formula changed, taking the bridge off the funding list.
