Downtown Additions Provide History Lessons
8/1/2012 (Updated 11:33:03 PM)
Three kiosks at the corner of Front St. and Main St., Court St. and Washington St., and Washington St. and Hawley St. feature pictures and text that tell the history of Binghamton.
There is also information about shops and services nearby. The three kiosks also feature a different glass mosaic depicting a part of Binghamton's history.
"We have a lot of traffic that comes to Downtown Binghamton for a variety of reasons who don't necessarily know what our city has to offer," said Nicole Howard, Chairwoman of the Gorgeous Washington Street Association. "The shops, the restaurants, the galleries. they don't know what we have to offer, nor do they understand the history of the city."
Among the history highlighted by the kiosks, the rise of IBM, Endicott-Johnson, and Binghamton's former status as the nation's second-largest producer of cigars.
