B-Mets Sweep Portland in Doubleheader
7/27/2012 (Updated 7/28/2012 6:15:25 PM)
In the opener, Binghamton grabbed the lead in the third against Portland starter Drake Britton (2-4). Juan Lagares scorched a triple off the top of the right center field wall to start the rally. Reese Havens quickly brought him home by bouncing an RBI single past Marquez Smith at third.
The B-Mets used the same recipe to double their lead in the fourth. Jefry Marte led off the inning with a double to left and scored when Dustin Martin threaded a bouncer up the middle.
Pitching for the first time since returning from the disabled list, B-Mets starter Cory Mazzoni (4-3) put together six strong innings in his fourth win. The righty allowed one run on four singles. He struck out five and walked two. Mazzoni walked two in the sixth, but ended the threat and capped his night by inducing Peter Hissey to pop out to third.
Frank Francisco took over in the seventh in his second rehab game with Binghamton. The New York Mets closer allowed a double to Ronald Bermudez to start the inning, but retired three straight to secure the save.
The nightcap started in frustrating fashion for the B-Mets. Through the first five innings, they collected six hits and walked six times against starter Mike MacDonald, but failed to score. Binghamton bounced into three double plays and watched two players get thrown out attempting to steal.
Meanwhile, the Sea Dogs scored their only run against Darin Gorski (6-5) in the second. Bryce Brentz deposited the first pitch he saw in the second inning over the left field wall.
It was the only blemish on the night for the southpaw. After Brentzs home run, Gorski faced just over the minimum, finishing six innings. He retired 14 of the final 16 batters he faced.
Martin eliminated the frustration with one swing in the sixth. MacDonald set the stage and ended his night by walking the first two he faced in the frame. Chris Balcom-Miller entered and got two outs before falling behind on Martin in a 2-0 count. Martin blasted the next offering down the right field line inside the foul pole for his second home run of the season.
Ryan Fraser took over for Gorski in the ninth and worked around a walk and a single to earn his first save as a B-Met. MacDonald (1-1) took his first loss while Balcom-Miller suffered his first blown save.
The B-Mets (50-55) continue their series against the Sea Dogs Saturday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Greg Peavey takes on RHP Jeremy Kehrt.
