Gas Disaster Plan
7/25/2012 (Updated 11:10:03 PM)The gas compressor station fire in Windsor Monday night has Broome County's Emergency Management team thinking more about a disaster plan already under development--
The fire, caused by a lightning strike was contained, quickly, and there were no injuries.
But what happens when natural gas fires burn out of control?
County officials say they are already working on a plan that takes into account the unique challenges presented by accidents involving gas drilling. Fire Coordinator Brett Chellis says those challenges include gaining access to high towers and drilling rigs, rescues of workers from confined spaces, and the best ways of containing uncontrolled gas releases.
