BINGHAMTON -- For the last three years an American has made the LG&T Finals, but it wasn't until this year that one finally won as Michael Yani topped Fritz Wolmarans at Rec Park Sunday 6-4, 7-6.
Yani broke Wolmarans for the only break of the match in the first set on his way to taking it 6-4.
In the second both players traded service holds until Wolmarans led 6-5. The 12th game of the set proved to be more difficult for Yani, as Wolmarans took a commanding 40-love lead on the former Duke Blue Devil's serve. However, Yani stormed back, eventually winning the game and forcing a tiebreak.
The tiebreak was just as close as the rest of the second set, but Wolmarans double faulted on match point to give Yani the 13-11 win in the tiebreaker.
The next stop for Yani is Lexington for next weeks challenger there in Kentucky.
