LG&T Tennis Challenger Thursday Action

BINGHAMTON -- Second Round singles and more doubles action today at the LG&T.

Second Round Singles Results:

New Zealander Daniel King-Turner upset wild card and number 5 seed Robby Ginepri today in 3 sets, 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-4. The match featured only 2 service breaks, one in each of the second and third sets. Ginepri called for the trainer twice during the match to work on his right shoulder which appeared to be giving him trouble. By the end of the match Ginepris first serves were clocking in at less than 80 MPH.

Ginepri is currently ranked 184th in the world after hitting career high ranking of 15th in the world in 2005. He reached the semi-finals at the U.S. Open in 2005, losing to Andre Agassi in 5 sets, and has reached the 4th round at the French Open, Wimbledon and the Australian Open. This year, Ginepri reached the final of the USTA Challenger event in Honolulu. King-Turner has played mainly on the Futures circuit, but did reach the quarter-finals of the Kaohsiung, Japan Challenger event this year.

Rhyne Williams (USA) easily dispatched qualifier Mitchell Frank (USA) in the first match today on center court, 6-2, 6-2. Williams, 20, a former top junior and University of Tennessee standout, turned pro last summer after winning a Pro Circuit Futures event in Florida. He was a 2 time All American at Tennessee and advanced to the NCAA singles final in 2011.
Frank just completed his freshman year at the University of Virginia, where he was named the #1 singles player in Division 1 tennis.

Greg Oullette (USA) defeated qualifier Andrew Carter (USA) 6-4, 6-2. Ouellette, 26, from Ormond Beach FL was a 5 time All-American at the University of Florida and was #2 in the ITA Division 1 collegiate rankings during his senior year in 2008. Carter, 22, of the University of Louisville, was the number 1 ranked player in North Carolina under 18s in 2007.

In the feature match tonight qualifier Fritz Wolmarans (RSA) defeated Bradley Klahn (USA) 7-6(4), 6-3. Wolmarans has played for the South African Davis Cup team and is currently ranked 510 in the world. In October 2011 he reached his best ATP ranking of 198. He has reached 2 Futures semi-finals this year, and captured 1 Challenger level event win in 2011.
Klahn, 21, won the NCAA singles title in 2010 while in his sophomore year at Stanford. That same year he appeared in Binghamton as a wild card, advancing to the quarter-finals. He recently launched his professional career after having graduated from Stanford.

Doubles Results:

The top seeded doubles team of Austin Krajicek (USA) and Izak Van der Merwe (RSA) withdrew from the tournament today due to a Van der Merwes pulled hamstring. They were scheduled to play the Israeli team of Dudi Sela and Harel Srugo, who will now advance to the doubles semi-final.

Adrien Bossel (SUI) and Michael McClune (USA) defeated Ruben Gonzales (PHI) and Michael Venus (NZL) 7-6(3), 6-4. Bossel and McClune, who defeated the #2 seed doubles team of Vahid Mirzadeh and Maciek Sykut (USA) yesterday, are teaming up together for the first time, and will now advance to the doubles semi-final.

The number 3 seeded doubles team of Tennys Sandgren (USA) and Rhyne Williams (USA) defeated Greg Jones (AUS) and Greg Ouellette (USA) in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
Sandgren and Williams, both 20, were All-American teammates at the University of Tennessee. Two weeks ago they reached the semi-final of the Winnetka, Illinois Challenger event, and have won 3 Pro Circuit Futures events this year as a doubles team.

In a first round doubles match that was postponed from yesterday, Jamie Baker (GBR) and Christian Harrison (USA) defeated the #4 seeded doubles team of Daniel King-Turner (NZL)  and Gleb Sakharov (FRA) 6-3, 7-6(3). King-Turner, 28, defeated Robby Ginepri earlier in the day to advance to the singles quarter-final. He advanced to one doubles final in Challenger events this year, in Taiwan, and partners with Michael Venus on the New Zealand Davis Cup team. Sakharov, 24, won 4 Futures doubles titles in 2011.
Harrison and Baker are teaming up for the first time. In 2011, Harrison advanced to 2 Futures semi-finals in doubles. Baker has 4 lifetime Futures wins and 1 Challenger win in doubles.
