B-Mets swept by Thunder

BINGHAMTON -- The Trenton Thunder completed a three-game sweep, defeating the Binghamton Mets, 7-1, Wednesday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. The Thunder collected nine hits, including five doubles, to push the B-Mets to twelve games out of first place, their largest deficit of the season.

The Thunder took the contest wire-to-wire, scoring the game's first run in the opening inning against starter Cory Mazzoni. Jose Pirela led off with a single to left and scored two batters later on a double play. Trenton added another run in the second on an RBI double by Jose Gil.

Binghamton scratched out their only run in the second off starter Vidal Nuno. Eric Campbell walked, moved to third on Allan Dykstra's single and scored when Jefry Marte bounced into a double play.

The B-Mets loaded the bases later in the inning, but failed to break through. Juan Lagares flied out to center to end the threat. Nuno faced one over the minimum over his final four innings. He left after allowing one run on six hits over six frames.

After allowing Gil's double, Mazzoni retired ten straight batters before his day ended. He allowed two runs on three hits over five innings.

Trenton blew the game open in the seventh against the B-Mets bullpen. Jeff Stevens and Adrian Rosario were tagged for three runs on four hits, including three doubles. The Thunder added two more runs in the eighth against Rosario.

Craig Heyer took the reins in the seventh and tossed two scoreless innings, allowing two hits. Francisco Rondon navigated around a single and walk to throw a scoreless ninth.

Mazzoni (3-3) had his personal two-game winning streak snapped in the losing effort while Nuno (5-2) collected his fifth win. Mazzoni's 14-inning scoreless streak came to an end in the first.

The B-Mets (45-51) hit the road for a seven-game swing that brings them to Bowie, Maryland for four games and New Britain, Connecticut for three. The set against the Bowie Baysox starts Thursday night at 7:05 PM. LHP Mark Cohoon takes the mound against LHP Rick Zagone.
