Hazmat Crews Called to Binghamton General Hospital
7/16/2012 (Updated 11:19:52 PM)
A hospital spokesperson says around 5:00PM a barrel of organic peroxide was punctured by a fork lift.
That spill was cleaned up, and the leftover material was transferred to another container and put on a loading dock near the emergency room.
Sometime before 9:00PM, the remaining chemicals began giving off smoke, and some of that smoke got into the hospital's ventilation system.
That smell caused emergency room patients to be moved to the observation ward.
At one point streets around the hospital and a portion of the parking lot were closed off.
