B-Mets sending trio to all-star game; Lose 4th straight
6/29/2012 (Updated 11:14:29 PM)
"This recognition is well-deserved for these guys," said B-Mets manager Pedro Lopez. "It is an honor that three of my players have been selected and it is an honor for them that they get to represent their team and the New York Mets organization."
Infielder Eric Campbell, 25, will be making his first trip to an All-Star Game in his professional career. An eighth-round draft pick by the Mets in 2008 out of Boston College, Campbell is in his third year with the B-Mets. In 57 games this season, he has compiled a .325 batting average, the third-best in the league and highest among active players.
The Connecticut native has launched five home runs, driven in 31 runs and led the team with 15 doubles. His .433 on-base percentage ranks him atop the Eastern League.
Starting pitcher Zack Wheeler, 22, earns his second-straight All-Star selection. Acquired from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Carlos Beltran in July 2011, Wheeler was named a California League Midseason All-Star while he was a member of the San Jose Giants (High-A).
Pitching at the Double-A level for the first time, Wheeler has a 7-3 record and compiled a 2.29 ERA, the third-lowest in the league. The righty has allowed the lowest opponent's batting average among starters in the league (.182) and averaged 8.81 strikeouts for every nine innings thrown. Wheeler was also selected to pitch for the US Team in the All-Star Futures Game to be held in Kansas City on July 8.
Third baseman Jefry Marte, 21, is headed to his first All-Star Game. The native of the Dominican Republic started the season with the B-Mets on a tear, hitting .326 over his first 36 games. He is Binghamton's active leader with six home runs and 37 RBI. Signed as non-drafted free agent in July 2007, Marte is in his fifth season with the Mets organization. He played for the World Team in the 2011 All-Star Futures Game.
The B-Mets (36-40) continue their eight-game homestand tonight at 6:35 PM against the Bowie Baysox (38-39).
