State Job Fair Offers Great Opportunities

Unemployment may be up from last year but there wasn't a shortage of jobs at Broome Community College Friday.

More than 45 companies were at B.B.C. looking for potential employees at the annual greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce Career Fair, part of Governor Cuomo's NY Works Program.

There was a wide range of open positions, from health care, to truck driving to engineering.

"It's great to see the people that are in the community and tell them about how great Universal Instruments is.  Even if we don't hire them now, it's a basis for the the future.  We can always take their resumes, we put them in our system, I'm always going through them." said HR Manager for Universal Instruments Kim Hawk.

"We have a negative connotation of there are no jobs here.  There are in fact jobs here.  Some of them are very specific minded, but some of them are not.  Some of them you can train to learn.  People should just realize that this is really a great area to be in.  It's a great area to have your family, raise your kids, and find a job." said the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce Manager of membership and marketing Vikki Collazo.

"The key to a fair like this is, come out and be seen by local employers.  They might not have a job for you right now that suits you, but, they get to know you and when there is an opening, you may be the first one in the door," said Lou Santoni, the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce President.

Job seekers also had a chance to take part in workshops on interview techniques and job search tips.
