Owego Petition Seeks to Ban Fracking
6/15/2012 (Updated 11:34:08 PM)Erlier this week, it was reported that Governor Cuomo might allow fracking specifically in the Southern Tier area.
Now, a group of Owego residents is calling for the town board to declare a moratorium on fracking...
Next week, on Tuesday, RAFT - or, Residents Against Fracking Tioga will present the board with 1,000 more signatures it says are from town residents who want the ban.
RAFTt presented another thousand signatures to the board in April.
The group says 69 percent of the 2,900 voters contacted door-to-door signed the petition.
According to Gerri Wiley, who coordinated the petition for RAFT,
"We're definitely hoping our 2,000 signatures--and we're not done petitioning as yet--will give the board reason to very quickly enact a moratorium."
The group says reported plans by the governor to allow fracking in counties close to the Pennsylvania border, including Broome and Tioga, adds extra urgency to it's cause.
