B-Mets hold on to top Akron 5-4

BINGHAMTON -- The B-Mets scored four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by Rylan Sandoval, and held on to defeat the Akron Aeros 5-4 Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. B-Mets starter Darin Gorski went a season-high 6.1 innings to collect his first win since April 19.

Leading by one, Reese Havens started the big rally by walking against Akron starter Paolo Espino. Juan Lagares followed with a single to right and Travis Ozga doubled Binghamtons lead with a double down the left field line. Juan Centeno kept the hit parade going with an RBI single. Sandoval capped the rally by stroking a two-run triple to the right field alley, giving the B-Mets a 5-0 advantage.

Binghamton drew first blood in the game thanks to Matt den Dekker in the third. The B-Mets center fielder crushed a 2-0 pitch from Espino over the right field fence for his team-leading eighth homer of the season. Espino (0-2) allowed five runs over five innings in his second loss.

The support was enough for Gorski (3-3) to collect his third win of the season and snap a six-start winless streak. The lefty retired 12 of the first 13 he faced to start the game. The Aeros finally scratched out a run in the fifth inning on a double by Matt Lawson.

Gorski posted a perfect sixth inning, but ran into trouble in the seventh. He issued a walk to Ryan Rohlinger and saw his night come to an end after allowing a triple to Ben Copeland. Brad Holt entered and allowed a pair of run-scoring hits.  By the time the righty fanned Kyle Bellows to end the frame the Aeros were within one run. Gorski allowed three runs on four hits and struck out three in the game.

It remained that way into the ninth as B-Mets failed to add any insurance runs. Adrian Rosario started the ninth, but could not finish it. The righty recorded two outs, but surrendered a base hit and issued a walk before Pedro Lopez made the call to the bullpen. With the potential tying run on second, Robert Carson entered and struck out Tim Fedroff to end the game, securing his second save in the process.

The B-Mets (26-27) continue their series against the Aeros Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM. RHP Greg Peavey matches up against LHP T.J. House.
