Let's Give Cancer The Boot Benefit - 7/31/2010

A local retired firefighters club is helping to keep community members safe in a different way:  by giving cancer the boot.

At Sam's Club on the Vestal Parkway Saturday the Retired Professional Fire Fighter Cancer Fund group held a "Let's Give Cancer The Boot" benefit.       

The organization was accepting donations and giving out promotional bracelets as well as B-Mets discount ticket vouchers.

Organizers say what most people don't know is that firefighters are more prone to certain types of cancer like lung and brain cancer due to the work they do everyday, and this is their chance to help.

"One hundred percent of all the money collected today goes directly to cancer research," said Bill Newland, president of Retired Professional Fire Fighters Cancer Fund.

 Gulf oil platform explodes, burning off La. coast
GRAND ISLE, La. – An offshore petroleum platform exploded and was burning Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 miles off the Louisiana coast, west of the site where BP's undersea well spilled after a rig explosion.
