Meet the Growers Day - 7/31/2010

Wegmans in Johnson City held a "Meet The Growers Day" Saturday. The store says it was a chance to support local growers and for the community to meet who's behind their food.

There was a clam bake and, of course, lots of produce as shoppers came out to enjoy good food at the store.

They had the opportunity to meet local growers from Syracuse and areas in Pennsylvania who provide Wegmans with their crops.

"We like to connect our customers really to the field with the produce and farmers we do business with. We do a lot of business with local folks, out of Syracuse and some closer farmers from PA, and it just helps our customers connect with them," said Chris Maxwell, a Wegmans manager.

Organizers say working to support local growers also reduces the distance the food travels, creating a positive environmental impact.

 Gulf oil platform explodes, burning off La. coast
GRAND ISLE, La. – An offshore petroleum platform exploded and was burning Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 miles off the Louisiana coast, west of the site where BP's undersea well spilled after a rig explosion.
