Students Aren't Making the Grade in New York State - 7/28/2010

New data released Wednesday by state officials shows that students aren't making the grade when it comes to standardized testing.

Fewer New York students are meeting or exceeding state standards this year than in past years -- especially in english and  math.

The state's data covers grades three through eight.

Across the state, 53 percent of students met or exceeded english standards this year - down from 77 percent in 2009.

That figure is 61 percent for math this year - down from 86 percent in 2009.

 Gulf oil platform explodes, burning off La. coast
GRAND ISLE, La. – An offshore petroleum platform exploded and was burning Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 miles off the Louisiana coast, west of the site where BP's undersea well spilled after a rig explosion.
