Broome County Health Program, WIC, Turns 30 - 7/22/2010
WIC is turning 30, and in today's economy more and more working families have come to rely on it.
Liala Clark has been feeding her family with the help of WIC for eight years.
"So I guess if I didn't know about it or didn't have it then I wouldn't know as much as I know now about how to properly take care of yourself and your kids," said Liala Clark, mother of 5.
WIC, or Women, Infants and Children, provides families with a monthly allowance to buy staple foods such as milk, baby formula and eggs.
In Broome County alone, 5,300 families are in the program, and officials say 5,300 more qualify, but just aren't enrolled.
"Also we are a nutritional education program so we talk to families and see their goals and help them reach their goals," Colleen Coddington, from the Broome County Health Department.
Today parents like Liala came down to the Broome County Health Department to celebrate what WIC has done for them. Other families came out to see if they qualify.
"They are very informative with the packets and brochures that helps you learn how much portions to provide your children and yourself and all the information of immunization and help that you might need domestic or education," said Clark.
And for the families that are in the program, they say it's something they couldn't do without.
"It did help with the budget too, the money that i saved on the food got through WIC I could use on other things that were needed," said Grace Mohrien, enrolled in WIC for 5 year.
A family of four making $40,000 or less a year qualifies for WIC.
People interested in learning more about WIC can call the Health Department and they will do the screening over the phone.
