Green Party Candidates Want Ban on Drilling - 6/30/2010

Two local Green Party candidates are calling for a ban on drilling in the Marcellus Shale.

Cecile Lawrence is running for US Senate, and Howie Hawkins is running for governor.

Both came together Wednesday to say that drilling is irresponsible, and they will actively campaign against it. 

They say they want the Green Party of New York to join 70 other groups in the state that hope to ban drilling.

"Drill baby drill usually ends up spill baby, spill, as you can see now in the Gulf of Mexico. We're for a ban on hydrofracking because there are better options for energy, and what this really does is privatize the cost and socialize the risk," said Howie Hawkins, Green Party Candidate for Governor.

The Green Party candidates met with supporters Wednesday in Vestal.

The group is hoping to organize opposition to natural gas drilling.

GRAND ISLE, La. – An offshore petroleum platform exploded and was burning Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 miles off the Louisiana coast, west of the site where BP's undersea well spilled after a rig explosion.
