The Debt Threat - 6/12/2010
He's commanded US forces in Europe, Bosnia, and during Operation Desert Storm, and General Montgomery C. Meigs says one of the biggest threats currently facing the country doesn't come from foreign adversaries but from the national debt.Meigs, who spoke at the Binghamton University Forum's black tie gala dinner Saturday night, says the growing national debt, partly fueled by rising Social Security and Medicaid costs, could lead to the country having no federal budget within the next ten years. He says neutralizing this threat is easier said than done.
"First of all, we've got to cut our expenses and then we've got to bring in more revenue, which is sort of tricky because when you start cutting expenses it can hurt the revenue side, but there's a balance that has to be played there and we just have to establish the political will to do that," said Meigs.
As for the conflicts in the Middle East, Meigs says Iraqis need to come up with a compromise that allows Sunnis to take part in the government.
In Afghanistan, he says the government and Taliban also need to work together to stabilize the country.
The Binghamton Forum event also paid tribute to outgoing president Lois B. DeFleur. DeFleur spoke about the significant advances made at B.U. under her 19 year of leadership.
Former professor C. Peter Magrath will serve as interim president while a search for a new president is underway.
