$63 Million From Navy for Rockwell Collins - 5/14/2010
Tens of millions of dollars are on the way to Rockwell Collins, expected to be followed by up to 20 new jobs.The defense company recently won a 63 million dollar contract from the US Navy to develop an integrated training system, for a naval aircraft.
Rockwell officials say not only will the deal help to preserve 50 jobs at the Binghamton plant, but they'll also have to take on extra staff to handle the workload.
"This contract will develop a scale of training devices from desktop trainers onward up to highly complex, integrated, hands-on simulators that will be used to simulate maintenance trainers for the Hawkeye aircraft," said Bob Wuestner, Rockwell Collins.

Hinchey Announces $63 Million U.S. Navy Award for Rockwell Collins in Binghamton to Create and Save 70 Jobs
Binghamton, NY -- Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) Friday visited Rockwell Collins' Binghamton campus to announce a $63 million award from the U.S. Navy that will create 20 local jobs and help retain 50 jobs.
The federal funds will be used to develop an integrated training system for maintenance on the E-2D Hawkeye - a Naval aircraft designed to give long-range warning of incoming aerial threats.
"I am so proud that this technology, which will protect our troops in the field is being built right here in Binghamton," said Hinchey. "This project will provide work for 50 current Rockwell employees and 20 new hires. In the past I've helped direct several projects to Rockwell's Binghamton workforce to create jobs and lay the groundwork for additional federal contracts like the one we're announcing today."
The U.S. Navy awarded the $63 million Hawkeye Integrated Training System - Maintenance (HIT-M) contract to Rockwell Collins Simulation and Training Solutions in Binghamton. In delivering the first training program of its kind for the E-2D Hawkeye, Rockwell will create a comprehensive curriculum, including instructor led training, computer aided instruction and interactive courseware. A simulated maintenance trainer, power plant trainer and logistical support are also paid for by the grant.
In the last three years, Hinchey has used his position on the House Appropriations Committee, including his seat on the Defense Subcommittee, to help direct $8.32 million in federal funds to Rockwell's workforce in Binghamton. In the fiscal year 2010 budget, he secured $2.72 million for Rockwell to help create a safer, more useable pilot cockpit for the CH-47 helicopter. In FY2009, $1.6 million was obtained to refine the Pilot Vehicle Interface (PVI) functions of the CAAS cockpit for the CH-47F aircraft. In FY2008, Hinchey secured $4 million for Rockwell to create additional Defense Advanced GPS Receivers for troops in the field.
Rockwell Collins is a leader in the development and deployment of innovative communication and aviation electronic solutions for both commercial and government applications. The E-2D Hawkeye, for which Rockwell will develop the maintenance training system, was developed by Northrop Grumman. The aircraft assists the Navy's battle management command and control by improving early warning of incoming threats that keeps troops out of harm's way.
