Dealing With Disaster - 5/3/2010
Students at the Decker School of Nursing say when disaster strikes, they need to be prepared for anything."Head trauma, broken limbs...checking airways, checking circulation" said senior Amanda Kazanizsky of the types of trauma that could be expected in emergencies.
"I'm just trying to take it one step at a time, deal with things as they come up," said senior Leah Miller as she prepared for a surge of seriously injured patients to enter Binghamton University's Events Center.
There wasn't an actual emergency -- BU hosted a disaster drill for its nurses-in-training.
The Red Cross helped organize the hands-on lesson using information from its yearly analysis of likely local disasters.
"We base the drills off those hazards that may occur, so it's very important that they're familiar with what types of incidents could happen," said Jason Davis, Deputy Director of Emergency Services for the American Red Cross.
One station staged a bus accident, while at another students hosed down victims of a chemical spill. They said while Monday's disasters were fake, the cries for help and injuries not real, they treated it like the real deal because someday a patient's life could depend on them.
"The next time we are going to be in a situation like this, it's going to be the real thing," said Miller. "It's really important that we know how to deal with the unexpected."
EMT and pre-med students worked alongside the future nurses -- a part of the lesson students say is just as important as diagnosing and treating the pretend patients.
"It's just not, 'The nurses do this and the doctors do that and EMTs do this.' It's everyone needing to work together," said Kazanizsky.
Working together to make sure real disasters have the best possible outcomes.
