Taxi Cab Legislation Passes - 3/18/2010
After years of complaints and discussion--Broome County will take over the regulation of the local taxi industry.Legislators passed the measure 13 to 3 at tonight's monthly meeting.
Starting this summer, Broome County will issue permits to operate cabs, regulate fares, and make sure vehicles are kept clean and safe.
The regulation will be paid for by a variety of fees charged to taxi companies.
"It's not going to be a cost to the taxpayers, the industry is going to be paying for all the inspections and the permits, so I think it's a good thing, and it's going to clean up the industry," said Leg.Gene LaBare.
Each company will be required to pay $300 annually for each vehicle in their fleet, $100 less than the original legislation called for, as well as pay for inspections and drivers' licenses.
