Cuomo Cracks Down on State Pension System - 3/18/2010
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is expanding his efforts to crack down on fraud in the state pension system.Cuomo announced Thursday he's sending letters to 28 state agencies, authorities and local governments that have some of the highest salary or pension payments in New York...and Broome County is one of them.
The average annual pension payment in the state is $25,000, but some retirees are receiving more than $300,000 dollars a year, and end up receiving more in pension than they are in salary.
"We want to protect the system for those people who are being served by the system.
We have made a deal with public employees across the state and we honor that. But, we're not going to allow any waste, fraud, or abuse to exist in the system," Cuomo said.
Cuomo says the increased pension costs are partly a result of public employees monopolizing overtime shifts in order to boost their end of career salaries.
