Benefits of Being Baccalaureate - 3/16/2010

Binghamton Hgh Shool is one of 44 high schools in the state that offers students the opportunity to become international baccalaureates.
   
Jnior and senior students who participate in the international baccalaureate program take classes in several different courses, including geography and language.

The program director general, Jeffrey Beard, addressed Binghamton Rotarians Tuesday afternoon about the program.

He says the goal of the IB is to promote international understanding among students worldwide.

"We require students to learn a second language, to learn, not only about their own mother culture, but about the culture of others because the big emphasis with us is in international understanding and respect," said Beard.

Beard also says IB students typically do better in college than students who were not in the program.

 Gulf oil platform explodes, burning off La. coast
GRAND ISLE, La. – An offshore petroleum platform exploded and was burning Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 miles off the Louisiana coast, west of the site where BP's undersea well spilled after a rig explosion.
