Survivor Stories - 3/15/2010
They call themselves Survivor Sisters. They're linked by the impossible circumstances they've overcome, like the challenge of fighting breast cancer."I went through surgeries and chemo and treatment," remembers breast cancer survivor Emily Gunzenhauser.
Or the heart ache of watching a child go through treatments.
"When they said the word 'leukemia,' I thought he was going to die, because when I was a kid, kids died of leukemia," said Linda Salomons, whose son was diagnosed with the disease when he was four years old.
It was that feeling of hopelessness The Art School in Vestal says it wanted to combat with Survivor Stories.
The films tell how local women or their children battled cancer...and won.
Survivor Stories debuted to standing-room only crowds when they opened at the Art Mission Theater a year ago this month. Now the school has the films on display in a way it hopes will help it reach an even larger audience.
The films were recently posted on the school's web site.
One woman talks about choosing to deal with the side effects of a double mastectomy and hysterectomy after learning she was genetically predisposed to cancer.
"In the end, those side effects definitely far outweighed my having cancer and having to go through it anyway and then live with that kind of guillotine over your head for the rest of your life," said Wendy Cubic.
Others aim to give those who are newly-diagnosed an idea of what to expect.
"There were just so many little things that surprised me that I didn't know about," said Gunzenhauser.
But the overall message these survivors want to share is a message of hope.
"You can find good, positive things that do come out of having to deal with these sorts of things," said Kim King, whose daughter was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma three years ago and is tumor-free today. "You can live life more fully and life in the present."
"It makes such a huge difference to talk to other people and to hear stories from other people who've been through it, because it gives you hope," said Salomons.
Viewers can e-mail the women if they want to ask questions or tell their own stories to someone who's been there.
