Ingersoll Rand Closing Its Doors - 3/9/2010
In Athens, in Bradford County, a small community is bracing for its latest economic blow, the closing of the Ingersoll-Rand plant. It is the last major employer in that borough, and the entire plant, and its remaining 200 employees will be gone by the end of the year.
The mayor says lay-offs will begin in June.
"The plant itself was entirely within Athens borough and it was a main source of employment for a good many generations of people, and they all owed their livelihood to basically, Ingersoll Rand," said Athens Mayor George Whyte.
Ingersoll Rand has offered severance packages and relocation for workers to a company operation in North Carolina.
But the mayor says many residents are reluctant to leave.
The plant, which once employed 1,500, has been part of the town since the late 1800's.
