Medicare Not Enough For Cancer Victim - 3/9/2010
A local family says the health care reform being pushed by President Obama could have saved them financial stress on top of devastating heart ache.Darlene Webber says her sister-in-law, Charlotte Underwood, died Monday night after an 8-month battle with leukemia.
Webber says Underwood and her husband couldn't afford medical insurance.
The family used Medicare to pay for treatments but struggled to cover some out-of-pocket expenses.
Webber, who is also the mother of a cancer survivor, says her family is in favor of health care reform that would make medical care affordable for all.
"Fortunately, I just started working for the school in September and she got diagnosed in February, and I know I couldn't have afforded even working where I worked elsewhere, I couldn't have afforded the health insurance premium," said the cancer victim's sister-in-law Darlene Weber.
Webber is putting together a benefit for her brother's family.
It's scheduled for this Sunday at the Lisle Fire Hall from 11 until 4 in the afternoon.
