County-Wide Taxi Legislation Hits Snag - 3/8/2010
Legislation to regulate the taxi industry in Broome County hit another snag Monday. Many local municipalities had called on the county to oversee the taxi industry after complaints of high fares and crazy rides, like the ones that we looked in to last year.
But a resolution to introduce legislation to the County Legislature was held over Monday after many taxi operators voiced displeasure with it.
Those in attendance say fees to be paid by the companies are too high, because the legislation is based on similar law in Newburgh, NY where close proximity to New York City provides enough business to warrant higher fees.
"Up here in Binghamton, we don't have a strong airport, we have no rail system here, and at the bus station, there isn't a ton of business coming out of the bus station," said Bob Pornbeck of A1 Courtesy Cab.
Legislators say they are holding any vote on the resolution until next week.
