Save Regents or Save Money? - 3/8/2010
Almost 14 millions dollars could be saved, if the state does away with several Regents exams. The New York State Board of Regents met on Monday to discuss eliminating some exams in math, science, global history and other subjects.
The proposal comes at a time when New York is facing a major credit crunch.
Education officials say preparing and scoring Regents exams costs the state a lot of money.
"Especially if you're doing it in a paper environment, you're bringing in staff on days or times other than their normal schedule and in current environments they'd get paid for that, so scoring is an excessive cost," said Broome-Tioga BOCES Superintendent Allen Buyck.
The board is also considering discontinuing Chinese, Haitian-Creole, Korean and Russian translations of the exam.
