Gillibrand for Local Businesses and Against Drilling - 3/5/2010
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was in the Southern Tier speaking with local leaders about the area's economic concerns. The junior senator spoke about using federal grant money to help out local businesses and municipalities.
Gillibrand also said she's not in favor of expediting the natural gas drilling process, something toted as a major source of potential revenue for the Tier.
She says in her hometown of Albany, manufacturing plants caused severe pollution, and she does not want to see similar problems in the Southern Tier.
"I would never want to have to ask that question as a mother. You know, how much is too much PCBs in the water I bathe my child in? I wouldn't ever want to have to ask that question. So we don't want to replicate that same problem here with some other chemical that we just didn't happen to know if it's bad for you," said New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
Gillibrand emphasized the importance of keeping area students upstate, by developing well-paying high tech jobs.
