Lacrosse Tournament Remembers Local Player - 2/7/2010
Lacrosse players from as far as St. Louis competed in a local Lacrosse tournament in memory of a player who died during the game three years ago.The John Mack Memorial Lacrosse Tournament is in honor of John Mack, a 17 year old Binghamton Lacrosse player who suffered a blow to the chest while playing a game in 2007 and later died.
Mack's uncle started the tournament after his death, with the goal of raising money to purchase defibrillator for area sports games.
He says if there would've been a defibrillator available at his nephew's game, he would not have died.
"John's life could've been saved if a defibrillatorr was on site. These things are rare but they do happen and if defibrillators are available in the community, we can save lives," said Robert Mack, the tournament organizer and John's uncle.
Defibrillator use an electric shock to restore a normal heartbeat. Mack says they can cost up to $1500.
With the money he has raised duriing the previous years tournaments, he's given out 32 defibrillator to the community.
