Passing Taxi Regulation to the County - 2/3/2010
The City of Binghamton is ready to hand over regulation of the taxi cab industry to Broome County.Following customer complaints of wild taxi rides--which we looked into last year, the City Council Wednesday unanimously passed a resolution which would allow the county to draw up rules and requirements for the operation of taxis in Binghamton and throughout Broome County.
Currently, each municipality regulates taxi businesses within their jurisdiction, but council members say that doesn't make sense since taxis don't stay in just one town.
"It makes sense to combine that for all municipalities so that all taxi companies are covered inside the county so that we have a uniform taxi law so that all the taxi owners know that they have a set of rules, and these are the rules and they apply to everybody," said Councilman Charles Kramer.
Council members say they expect the county-wide legislation of taxis to be considered sometime this spring.
