New Year, New You - 1/2/2010

In order to keep those New Year's resolutions, you must prepare your mind for a change.

"One of the keys to healthy living is a healthy mind, and that has to do with happiness, and if these things make you happy, that's the key," said Carol Dembrowski, who organized a Health Expo in Owego Saturday.

Losing weight tops the list of many New Year's resolutions and getting started can be tough.

"The biggest thing is kind of a mind over matter, you have to be in a space where you really want to get healthy and once you start on that journey of health, it's a wonderful road to be on," said Health Coach Dawn Davis.

Davis says it's all about changing your lifestyle and one of the first changes has to be the way you eat.

Try to eliminate going out to eat, if you cook for yourself, you can control how it's prepared.

"First of all you know what's going in to the food. If there's something in there you don't like, don't add it. You can find something that would mimic the same flavor perhaps but it wouldn't necessarily be as fatty or unhealthy," said chef Sue Michaels.

Then, you have to get the motivation to get off the couch and get moving.

"Exercise can be anything, it can be walking, it can be weight bearing, it can be non weight bearing, you need to be able to get up and move," Davis said.

In addition to exercising and eating right, reducing stress is also a way to live a healthier lifestyle in 2010.

"If you get a massage on a regular basis it will reduce your stress level. It will keep you out of the doctor's office, it will keep you out of the pharmacy, you won't have to take the pharmaceuticals, the medications," said massage therapist Eddie Smith.

A massage will certainly relax you, but why not try something you've never done before?

Acupuncture can help alleviate stress as well and even stop problems before they start.

"You can actually prevent things from happening, prevent yourself from getting sick, from getting chronic diseases, and it's also really good for controlling weight too," said acupuncturist Katie Edwards.

When all of these are put together, you have a recipe for a new you in 2010.
