U.N. Declaration Honored - 12/10/2009
"Article 3--everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person," said Peace Action members."Sometimes, we, Americans, tend to forget what human rights mean to people in other countries. When we bomb a village in Afghanistan, the Afghanis or the Pakistanis are saying, what about our human rights?" said Jim Clune of Peace Action.
About 10 people came out to Confluence Park to celebrate the adoption of the Universal Human Rights Declaration--which was signed by the General Assembly 61 years ago on December 10th.
And while members of Peace Action say the declaration has brought about good change--the battle for human rights is far from over.
"Our recognition of one person for another and the amount of respect we need to have for each other. I think those things are really deteriorating in our current society," said Barbara Kane-Lewis of Peace Action.
And members say it's shocking that on this anniversary, President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
"It's almost ironic that he's receiving this prize just days after his request for more troops," said Ann Clune of Peace Action.
These people braved the cold to promote human rights, but they say it'll take a strong effort to make real change.
"We need to be getting more and more involved with the way our nation is taking away rights of people in the rest of the world," said George Damasevitz of Peace Action.
