New Flood Plan Creates Criticism - 12/8/2009
Some Tioga County residents learned Tuesday whether their properties are at risk for being flooded.Residents stopped by the county office building to check out the new preliminary flood maps created by The Department of Environmental Conservation and FEMA.
The new maps provide residents with a realistic assessment for their risk for flooding.
While most locations in Tioga County didn't see any real changes, the Village of Nichols is protected by a levee system that may not meet
standards, leaving many properties vulnerable to flooding.
One Nichols resident says the new plan labels his neighborhood as a risk, and will raise flood insurance rates.
"That would increase it to $1,600 for an average home of $150,000, with only $50,000 content, that's my first concern. And that will show a mass exodus of the young couples that we want to move into the area, why would they move in?" said Daniel Cofone, Nichols Resident.
Tioga County residents can check their flood plain status by going to their municipal offices.
