Building a Holiday Workshop on Wheels - 12/1/2009
Some major construction is underway at Broome-Tioga BOCES."We're going through and putting lights in front of each of the displays just to light them up like a spotlight," says electrical student Drew Saunders.
"Making windows, electrical stuff, carpentry stuff, construction things, you know, we've been doing everything," said Daquan Brown, a building trades student.
Members of the school's chapter of the SkillsUSA club are building a holiday workshop on wheels for Johnson City's holiday parade this Thursday.
"Now it's crunch time, we've got a couple days to go so we've got a lot of folks working," said Angel Mead, BOCES' SkillsUSA adviser.
The kids plan to dress up as elves to showcase the work of 16 of BOCES occupational programs. Stations on the float will include a working plumbing system and a live calf dressed as a reindeer in the animal science section.
All of the classes that will be featured on the float also had a hand in building it. Students say it was good to get the chance to combine skills with classes they don't normally get to work with.
"We make...a very active team," said Brown. "We always help each other out, like we never try to compete. We do a good job, you know?"
Students say they're excited to get the chance to put their work on display for the holiday crowds.
"It's pretty amazing to see what we could do in two weeks. Hopefully it looks great," said Saunders.
After all, these aren't really Santa's elves filling Santa's shelves. They're Broome-Tioga BOCES Students...and they've got skills.
