Good Deal Hunting - 11/27/2009
Every good bargain hunter knows Black Friday shopping requires some serious strategy."We try to go to the stores that end their sales first," said experienced Black Friday shopper Noelle Ripley of Marathon.
For some, staying focused and avoiding potential spending traps was a bit more difficult.
"I ended up with a lot of things I probably don't need," said first-timer Rebekah Newman of California. "But oh, well -- they were cheap."
One look at the decorated terrain of stores and shopping malls shows signs that customers aren't the only ones looking to make a killing.
Retailers are also on the prowl, trying to lure in shoppers with limited time deals and special offers -- doing their best to move profits for the year from the red into the black.
"Spend $100 at Aeropostale and get a free stuffed bear!" one Aeropostale worker announced outside the clothing store.
The Oakdale Mall expects profits to be up from last Black Friday, but says the day doesn't pack the punch it did in the past.
"When you open at 4:00, you have destination shoppers at the major stores and then it kind of calms down again," said director of marketing for the mall, Nancy Phillips.
In some cases, the crowds thatstores attracted worked against them.
"The lines are horrible," said Newman. "I just don't end up buying anything because I don't want to wait in line."
A definite drawback considering many were already planning to cut back holiday spending.
"I don't have that extra this year, so the buys that you get are definitely worth it," said Ripley.
Retailers are hoping the longer hours and slashed prices will be worth it, and customers can save some green while helping to pull stores out of the red this Black Friday.
