BHS Thanksgiving Day Dinner - 11/26/2009
"They just do a super duper job," David Jerry Chamberlin said of the students who organize Binghamton High's free annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner.
For Chamberlin, the dinner *is* Thanksgiving. He says he's grateful for the kindness student organizers have shown him for the past four years.
"They're giving their time up to be here taking care of us, and my heart goes out to them," he said.
This is Elizabeth Ludwig's first time coming to the dinner. She came with her son and neighbor, and says it's nice to be part of such a big celebration.
"Much better than being alone, because we don't have any family and it gets kind of lonely," Ludwig said.
Students say people started lining up for today's dinner two hours earlier than it was scheduled to begin. Some guests say this highlights how the weak economy has made events like this more important than ever this year.
"It's a very good thing," said Danny Morello of Kissimmee, FL, who was in the area visiting relatives. "I mean, they should do it more often, not just once a year."
As for the 300 student volunteers giving up part of their holiday to serve dinner, they say they're happy to have the chance to make a difference.
"It definitely makes you feel good because you're giving everyone a great Thanksgiving dinner that maybe couldn't have had one or just wanted to share it with other people," said Alexander King, a Binghamton student and volunteer at the dinner.
Perhaps one diner best sums up today's atmosphere in the school cafeteria:
"We are very happy to be here and this place is number one for Thanksgiving," said Caleb Le of Binghamton. "Thank you."
