Ernie Davis Classic: East Edges West - 11/25/2009
Ernie Davis. A pioneer of football in the southern tier and central New York. Davis starred at EFA and Syracuse and became the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. His legacy continues to carry on here where each year, all-star football players from Section 4 face-off for pride and glory. For the 20th time, the Ernie Davis classic took center stage. To U-E's Ty Cobb stadium we go where east stars like JC's Daquan Jones and U-E's Jordan Thomas butted heads with west stars including Waverly's Kevin Gorman and Newark valley's Travis French. This game was a defensive struggle with neither team scoring in the first quarter. With five left in the second, Travis French finally breaks the plane for the east stars and it's 7-0. West trying to drive just before the half. Here's a heave from JC's Jake Spalik, but check out the amazing interception by Ithaca's Phil Anderson. No scores went down in the third, so we flash to the 4th and that's when Jordan Thomas gathers some steam. He gallops inside the five, dives for the pylon and gets west on the doorstep. And a few plays later he punches it in for the touch. Instead of going for the tie, west goes for two. It's Thomas on the carry, it's oh so close, but they say he didn't make it and east holds a 7-6 edge. Last chance for west late in the game, but Jake Spalik gets sacked on 4th down and the east squad captures a 7-6 victory in the 2009 Ernie Davis classic. Afterwards, a couple of the winning players talked about the exciting win.
