Budget Battle Continues in Albany - 11/23/2009
State legislators headed back to Albany to work on closing the state's 3.2 billion dollar deficit -- but one local assemblyman says lawmakers are far from compromise.Clifford Crouch says cuts to education and health care are the major sticking points among fellow assembly members and senators.
He says Republicans in the Assembly have come up with a plan that would erase the deficit without making cuts to those areas... but says Governor David Paterson has so far ignored the plan.
"Consolidation of agencies is one of the biggest things, and getting rid of a lot of administrative overlap of staff once you do that. These are basically appointed positions. That's almost $1 billion in itself and it's common sense consolidation," said Crouch.
Governor Paterson has threatened to keep lawmakers in Albany over Thanksgiving if a compromise is not reached by then.
Crouch says he's not sure if working out a solution will take that long...but is prepared to stay in the capitol through the holiday.
